High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Maroubra Junction Public School, we acknowledge that high potential is expressed in diverse ways across our student community. Our approach to high potential and gifted education (HPGE) is woven into daily classroom practice, underpinned by ongoing formative assessment, research-informed teaching strategies, and purposeful differentiation to ensure every learner is supported and challenged to achieve their best.

The following information outlines some of the evidence-based strategies implemented in our classrooms to support all students:

Use of Ongoing Assessment to Guide Teaching
Teachers consistently gather information about student learning through diagnostic tasks, observations, and self-reflection activities. This evidence is used to pinpoint individual strengths and next steps, allowing lessons to be adjusted to meet diverse needs and support steady progress and engagement.

Differentiated Activities and Flexible Group Structures
Classroom tasks are planned at varying levels of complexity so that all students experience appropriate challenges. Learners may work independently, with a partner, or in adaptable groupings based on readiness, strengths, or interests. This approach promotes collaboration, builds confidence, and strengthens both academic and social capabilities.

Embedding High Expectations in Planning and Practice
Clear and ambitious learning goals are built into lesson design, encouraging critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Students are supported to set meaningful goals and reflect on their growth, helping to develop perseverance, confidence, and a strong belief in their ability to succeed.

Encouraging Student Agency and Leadership
Learners are provided with opportunities to lead discussions, contribute to projects, and engage in initiatives aligned with their interests. Involvement in goal setting and self-evaluation nurtures responsibility, motivation, and leadership development.

Commitment to Professional Growth and Collaboration
Educators participate in ongoing professional learning focused on high potential and gifted education practices. Through collaboration and shared planning, teachers refine strategies and design responsive curriculum experiences, ensuring consistent, high-quality learning opportunities for all students.
